Description

Tucked into the storied Worthington Valley, Maryland’s revered horse country, Sagamore Farm rests among sweeping emerald pastures and iconic white board fences that seem to stretch endlessly toward the horizon. This is a landscape shaped by tradition: mornings devoted to raising Thoroughbreds, crisp autumn afternoons of fox hunting, and the pageantry of steeplechasing, most notably the annual Maryland Hunt Cup, once attended by John F. Kennedy and other distinguished guests.

Founded in 1925 by Isaac Emerson, the visionary behind Bromo-Seltzer, Sagamore entered a new era in 1933 when it was gifted to Alfred G. Vanderbilt Jr. for his 21st birthday. Under Vanderbilt’s stewardship, the farm evolved into an international symbol of excellence in Thoroughbred racing—a standard-bearer whose influence would ripple far beyond Maryland’s rolling hills.

Under Vanderbilt’s stewardship, the farm flourished for decades as one of the most respected breeding and training facilities anywhere. Royal bloodlines grazed its pastures - the Queen of England herself kept a broodmare here - and racing luminaries shaped its future. Vanderbilt, a central figure in American racing and president of Pimlico Race Course, helped elevate Sagamore into an international destination for the sport’s elite.

The farm’s legacy is etched into racing history through its horses. None more iconic than Native Dancer, the “Galloping Grey Ghost,” whose electrifying career captivated the public and redefined greatness. Alongside Hall of Fame champions like Discovery and Bed o’ Roses, Sagamore Farm became a proving ground for legends - horses whose names still echo through the grandstands of the Triple Crown.

Time passed, as it always does, but Sagamore never lost its soul. In 2007, Maryland native Kevin Plank, founder and CEO of Under Armour, acquired the farm with a long-term vision: not simply to restore it, but to honor it. What stands today is the result of that stewardship, a rare balance of reverence and reinvention.

Set across more than 500± acres in the heart of Maryland Horse Country, Sagamore Farm is once again a premier breeding and training estate, designed for modern excellence while remaining deeply rooted in tradition. Three fully renovated barns open seamlessly to expansive turnout paddocks. A state-of-the-art Tapeta synthetic track delivers exceptional footing for training. The unique Clocker’s Tower offers a commanding vantage point; part operational hub, part refined gathering space.

At the center of the estate, a stately 16,000 square foot residence overlooks the manicured grounds. With six oversized en-suite bedrooms and gracious living spaces, the home is equally suited for elegant entertaining and quiet moments that look out over the land that made history. Thoughtfully designed staff accommodations, including a newly built bunkhouse with multiple apartments, ensure comfort and continuity for those who keep the farm running at the highest level.

Today, Sagamore Farm offers more than a remarkable facility. It offers possibility. A legacy Thoroughbred operation. An expansion into elite lay-ups, show jumping, or dressage. A visionary future shaped by someone who understands that this is not just land, it is living history.

With effortless access to I-83, I-695, BWI Airport, Washington, D.C., New York, and central to the world’s most prestigious racing venues, Sagamore Farm stands ready for its next chapter.
